ABOUT DEN SJUNGANDE JULGRANEN
After three years in the drawer, Den Sjungande Julgranen finally got its big break in 2004 when Pernilla Warberg (one of Gothenburg's best sources for "making something happen") saw an opportunity for the production to be featured in "Julstaden Göteborg" (Christmas in Gothenburg), an event conceived of by Leif Nilsson, the vice VD of Göteborg & Co. The event was supported by local sponsors and slated to run annually for three years with an aim to increase tourism and cheer up Gothenburgians and their Nordic neighbors. The arrangers for Julstaden Göteborg loved the idea of a "singing Christmas tree" and bought the production from Amy and Pehr and hired Amy as the Artistic Director.
Den sjungande julgranen (pronounced: den shoong-an-deh yule-grah-nen) “the singing Christmas tree”, is one of Gothenburg's most popular outdoor musical attractions presented during the city's annual Christmas event: "Julstaden Göteborg". Thanks to its sponsors, the event is free to the public and features some of the city’s best local choirs performing a wide range of international holiday favorites. Amy Elizabeth Wheeler, the production's artistic director, works closely with the choirs, musicians, and the production team to deliver holiday cheer year after year since the production’s debut in 2004. As an original choir memberin "The South Street Seaport Singing Christmas Tree" in New York City (back in the ‘80’s), Amy thought a similar production could be successful in Gothenburg. So in 2001, Amy presented the idea of a singing Christmas tree to Pehr Sandström (then in charge of special effects and set-building at Göteborgs Operan) who thought it was a terrific idea and immediately made drawings for the scaffolding and constructed a model.

Den sjungande julgranen takes great pleasure in being part of Christmas in Göteborg and the choirs and production team hope they will delight audiences as they have for the past fifteen seasons. Many thanks to Lodolakören and Thomas Lagerberg. Special thanks to Maria Drott, Pernilla Warberg, Mikael Isacson, Göteborg & Co, and Julstaden's generous sponsors for making this production possible from 2004-2019. We look forward to working with new partners and continuing to develop the production which has proven to be a benchmark for what public entertainment can achieve for the community.

We have enjoyed sixteen years entertaining the city of Gothenburg and are now seeking new partners to join us in continuing this much-celebrated holiday tradition. As both professional and amateur artists, we are dedicated to providing quality public entertainment for the city of Gothenburg and its visitors. In keeping with our previous successful model, we look forward to continuing our collaboration with the public, private, and commercial sectors to help us further develop programming that will include more of what makes this production so special and maintain it as the valued tradition audiences return to see year after year. We are happy to announce that Lycke Transport has joined our production team and helped save the production’s scaffolding by providing both first-class transport and a safe storage area during our off-season. As an important part of our production team we look forward to working with Lycke Transport and hope potential partners and sponsors will consider joining us in celebrating the winter holidays in Gothenburg.
